A wooded Devon landscape viewed from above Devon, outside

Weekend · 26–27 September

Seven good
reasons to
leave the house
this weekend

One proper coastal walk, a few low-effort escapes and enough small ideas to rescue Saturday from the sofa.

Start with the seven ↓

The useful bit

No bucket list.
Just a better weekend.

These are deliberately doable: one bigger adventure, a few close-to-home ideas and several options that still work if the weather turns.

The seven

Start with the coast. Keep the rest flexible.

Walk · Clovelly & Mouth Mill

The walk worth getting muddy for.

A 5.1-mile loop from Brownsham through woods, open ground and the coast above Mouth Mill — with an optional detour into Clovelly when your legs still agree.

Distance5.1 miles GradeModerate StartBrownsham RealitySteep + muddy

Why this one: it feels like a proper day out without requiring an expedition. The official route notes rocky sections, steep ascent and descent and paths that can be muddy — so this is the weekend for boots rather than optimistic white trainers.

Stay local · Crediton

Take the High Street slowly.

Walk into town without a list. Coffee first, browse somewhere you normally pass, then give yourself permission to make lunch the main event.

Rainproof · Exeter

Do the city without doing the shops.

Take the train in, pick one museum or gallery, walk a stretch of the Quay and come home before it turns into an entire day of carrying bags.

Outside · Close to home

Take the short walk, not the heroic one.

Pick a familiar local footpath and give it one hour. No route app, no summit, no performance. Turn around when the tea-and-cake instinct becomes stronger than the scenery.

After dark · Music

Go somewhere with a tiny stage.

Big nights out are overrated. Find a pub room, arts space or local set where you can hear the room, see the musicians and still be home before tomorrow becomes a problem.

Food · No ceremony

Buy one good thing and build lunch around it.

Bread, cheese, cake, apples, something warm — the rule is simple: start with one thing you actually want to eat and stop pretending lunch needs a concept.

SaturdayLow effort

Sunday · Reset

Leave the last hour unplanned.

Before the Sunday-evening machinery starts, go somewhere green with no objective other than coming back colder, clearer and mildly pleased that you bothered.

One rule

Do one thing that makes the weekend feel different from a weekday.

That’s enough.
