Crediton Town Square is turning green today as Sustainable Crediton brings its annual Big Green Fair back into the centre of town.
The Big Green Fair in the Square runs from 11am until 2pm today, Saturday 26 September, bringing together local environmental projects, community groups and people looking for practical ways to live a little more sustainably.
It has become an annual fixture for Sustainable Crediton, which says the fair is intended to help build a more resilient, supportive and climate-conscious community — while giving people a chance to find out what is already happening locally and how they can get involved.

The town’s annual Big Green Fair
Sustainable Crediton describes previous fairs as lively community events combining local stalls and projects with food, activities and entertainment.
The organisation says its fairs have featured everything from wildlife, gardening and recycling projects to energy advice, cycling, upcycling and local environmental campaigns. Previous years have also included live music organised by Crediton Arts Centre, refreshments from the Community Larder team and activities for children.
The emphasis is less on telling people to live differently and more on showing what is already happening around Crediton — and providing straightforward ways to take part.
The fair also gives Sustainable Crediton’s own projects a chance to meet people who may otherwise never come across them.
Its current work includes the Pollinator Project, Tree Team, Woodland Management Group, Food Larder, Repair Café and Climate Action Team.

The Repair Café starts an hour before the fair. It runs from 10am until noon at The Elephant on the Green, so there is time to visit both events.

Crediton’s Repair Café is running from 10am until noon at the Elephant on the Green, at 14 St Lawrence Drive.
The idea is simple: rather than throw a broken item away and buy another one, residents can bring things along for volunteer repairers to look at.
Sustainable Crediton describes the Repair Café as a community event where volunteers help fix items for free and can pass on repair skills at the same time.
That puts two sides of the same idea within walking distance this morning: repair what can be saved, then head into the square to see what else is being done locally.
A fair with a purpose
The first Big Green Fair was held in 2021, as the town emerged from Covid restrictions.
It has since developed into an annual September event. Sustainable Crediton says one of its main purposes is to connect its projects with the wider community — giving residents somewhere to ask questions, offer ideas, volunteer or simply discover work that is already taking place around them.
The organisation’s wider stated aim is to help people in Crediton and the surrounding area live more sustainably and work towards a carbon-neutral future.
For anyone who has seen the various groups, campaigns and projects mentioned separately throughout the year, today’s fair is essentially the chance to find many of them in one place.
